Argyle, Texas is a small bedroom community in Denton County that sprang from an agricultural settlement.  Today it is chock-full of charming retail establishments and lots of friendly people who are proud of their little town of about 3500 residents.

This is a blend of warm, sweet spices blended to serve a variety of needs in the kitchen.

 

Ingredients:  Organic cinnamon powder, nutmeg powder, organic lemon peel powder and organic coriander powder.

*Perfect for fruit pies, sauces, turnovers, compotes and fruit-based relishes.

*Lightly dust onto meats along with salt, black or red pepper, and dried or fresh herbs.

 

RECIPE:  Smoky Apple Pecan Dip

1 cup mayonnaise

2 tablespoons Creole or Dijon mustard

½ teaspoon ARGYLE APPLE PIE SPICE

½ teaspoon SMOKED PAPRIKA

¼ teaspoon FINE-GRIND WHITE PEPPER

1 cup Cheddar cheese, grated

½ cup pecans, chopped

4 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled

1 green onion, minced

1 tart apple, cored, but left unpeeled

Whisk together mayonnaise, mustard and spices until smooth and well-blended.

Stir in cheese, bacon and onion.

Grate apple and add to dip; mix well and chill 2 hours.

*Serve beside cold-cut platters.

*Makes a great bread spread served with roasted meats.

*Include on the menu with baked ham.

*Great dip for cold, boiled shrimp.

*Serve with crackers and dippers with cocktails.

 

RECIPE:  Winter Squash and Apples

1 large butternut squash, or winter squash of choice

4 tart apples; peeled, cored and chopped

2 cups fresh cranberries

½ cup sugar

2 teaspoons ARGYLE APPLE PIE SPICE

¼ cup water

1 stick butter, melted

Split squash in half lengthwise.  Place cut side down on an oiled baking sheet and roast at 350ºF for 1 hour, or until tender.  Once cool enough to handle, remove rind; discard and cut flesh into cubes.  Set aside.

Place apples, cranberries, sugar, spice blend and water in a saucepan and cook over medium-low heat until liquid is cooked away.  Stir often.

Combine squash cubes with apple/cranberry mixture and pour into a buttered casserole dish.

Pour melted butter over all and bake at 350ºF for 20-25 minutes, or until bubbling.

*Serve with turkey, ham or any roasted meat.

 

RECIPE:  Apple Ginger Muffins

For the muffin batter:

3 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons  baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons ARGYLE APPLE PIE SPICE

1 tablespoon minced CRYSTALLIZED GINGER

3 eggs

1 cup vegetable oil

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 cups sugar

4 apples, cored and chopped

Sift together flour, soda, salt and spice.  Add ginger; set aside.

Beat together until smooth and creamy the eggs, oil, vanilla and sugar.  Add to flour mixture and beat until smooth.

Fold in the apples.

Pour into greased or paper-lined muffin tins and sprinkle with topping.

Bake at 350ºF for 25-30 minutes.

For the streusel topping:

¾ cup all-purpose flour

¼ cup brown sugar, firmly packed

1 teaspoon CINNAMON POWDER

1 teaspoon minced CRYSTALLIZED GINGER

6 tablespoons cold butter

Place all ingredients into a mixing bowl with sloping sides.

With a pastry cutter, cut butter into dry ingredients until crumbly.

Helpful Hint:  If muffin tins are not lined with paper, allow muffins to cool in pan for 5 minutes before lifting out.

Yield:  2 dozen muffins

 

RECIPE:  Apple Skillet Cake

1½ cups all-purpose flour

1 cup sugar

2 teaspoons ARGYLE APPLE PIE SPICE

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ cup buttermilk

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

2 apples, cored, peeled & sliced

1 cup pecans, chopped

Sift dry ingredients together and set aside.

Beat the buttermilk, egg and extract until frothy; pour into flour mixture and mix until well-combined.

Fold in apple slices and pecans; pour into a buttered cast iron skillet.

Bake at 350ºF for 45 minutes.

Yield:  8 servings

 

RECIPE:  Fruit Salad Muffins

½ cup chopped dates

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup sugar

2 teaspoons  baking soda

2 teaspoons ARGYLE APPLE PIE SPICE

3 eggs

5 tablespoons butter, melted

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

3 large carrots, grated

1 apple, cored, peeled & grated

1 cup old fashioned oats, not instant

½ cup chopped pecans

½ cup sweetened, flaked coconut

In a heat-proof bowl, cover the dates with boiling water.  Allow to cool, then drain.

Sift together flour, sugar, baking soda and spice; set aside.

Whisk together eggs, melted butter and extract; pour into flour mixture.

Stir in dates with remaining ingredients, mixing well.

Fill muffin cups and bake at 350ºF for 25 minutes.

Yield:  2 dozen muffins

 

RECIPE:  Spice Fruit Dip

½ cup brown sugar, firmly packed

1½ teaspoon ARGYLE APPLE PIE SPICE

1 cup heavy cream

3 ounces cream cheese, softened

Mix sugar and spice blend until well-mixed; set aside.

Whip cream until stiff.

Beat in cream cheese until lumps are gone.

Fold in sugar and spice mixture.

Keep refrigerated until ready to use.

*Serve with fresh fruit as a dip.

*Spread on nut bread or bagels.

*Fold in dried or fresh fruit for fruit salad.
